I agree it's *usually* and likely an indicator of quality. Not value.
Behringer could not get $1200 for their strat knockoff
because everyone knows that they are not the same quality as other
$1200 guitars.
Again, quality does not equal value. A few years ago I bought a
top-of-the-line Panasonic VCR, which fried out after a year and a half.
I replaced it with a $60 Funai that's been going strong for about 7-8
years now.
Does that mean that Funai VCR's are built better than Panasonic VCR's?
No, it does not. In your case yes. But that is one instance.
