Does that mean that Funai VCR's are built better than Panasonic VCR's?
No, it does not. In your case yes. But that is one instance.

Chris

It also tells me Panasonic's product wasn't worth the price they were
charging. In this case, speaking to repair techs I was told that
consumer electronics innards are pretty much the same, and that they
saw as many name brand units coming in for repairs as they did no-name
brands.

Alternately, his experience with the VCRs might not mean anything
except that he might have jarred the Panasonic or a power surge might
have knocked it out or any number of other things that can potentially
cause it to fail may have occured. Now, if a good number of other
buyers also had problems with the same Panasonic VCR, that might be
indicative of something.

True; but the bigger point was that brand name VCR's broke down as
often as no-name VCR's. This means that quality being equal, then the
only variable left is value. And according to repair techs (the two
I've dealt with, anyway) brand name electronics are a marketing scam
and a waste of money.

That may very well be true. The way I understand how the consumer
electronics business works is that many name brands and off brand
products are the same but just branded differently for different
companies. My JVC VCR has been going strong for over 10 years; now
maybe I've been fortunate or maybe I just got lucky but, either way, I
would be inclined to buy more products by JVC based on my own
experience much like Guncho probably won't be buying anything from
Panasonic again any time soon..
