Hey Steve. A tube going out shouldnt destroy the power transformer. I'd
imagine it was something else besides a faulty tube that took them both
out at the same time..

That should be right. I have a 100W Nomad that uses 4 x 6L6s or 4
EL84s depending on how you want to tube it. That would be 25W per
tube. Are you confusing the EL34s with EL84s. I have a 30W amp
two of those in it.

Just checked - My Peavey Classic 30 has 4 EL-84 output tubes. The amp
is rated at 30 watts. I think those tubes would melt or blow up if you
tried to push 100 watts thru 'em. They're pretty small--same diameter
and a little taller than a 12AX7A.
BTW, the amp has Sovtek tubes in it. Is there a better choice? When
the amp had about 2 hours on it, one of the original tubes shorted and
took out the power transformer. Peavey fixed it under warranty--new
power transformer and a new set of output tubes. I would really like
to
avoid a repeat of that!
