Never got into the modes much...never really saw a use for it, but
maybe if I studied em a little I would.
I was shown the numbers system years ago, and I prefer that method of
thinking. It's amazing that so many guitarists call a blues song a
"one-four-five" but don't actually know what that means... Using the
numbers system makes sense, and other than using a note's name for key
reference, I don't mentally keep up with it.
Once I know the key, "D" minor for example, I just count. The
fretboard patterns make more sense because I'm not thinking individual
notes names, rather thinking in numbers (intervals) which don't change,
regardless of the "key".
