Well, I'd agree that guitars in general don't appreciate much. MOST
guitars aren't going to increase in value from year to year. There are
a lot of $150 - $300 starter guitars that are never really going to go
up in value. Most guitars are the type that parents would buy as a
Christmas present.
I'd say most Rickenbackers will appreciate in value given a few years.
Heck, the price of newish mint condition 4003 basses on Ebay is maybe
95% of what they sell new for RIGHT NOW. If you bought one two or three
years ago, and it is in mint or excellent condition, I'd say you might
make $100 (after fees) over what you paid by selling it on Ebay.
I myself have bought Gibsons new, and see the used price go several
hundred $$ above what I paid new within a year or two.
Not saying it happens with ALL guitars, but it happens with some for
sure. Mainly it is due to the insane rate at which American Guitar
companies raise prices. In 1999 a USA Fender strat was $650 new, now
they are $950 new. My local used guitar shop is selling excellent
condition ones for $650 used. In a year or two a 1999 Fender will be
worth more used than when bought new in 1999, assuming that you treat
it very well and don't ding it up or wear the frets out.
In general you don't see this sort of thing happen with Asian guitars,
because the price doesn't rise at such an insane rate (far above the
cost of inflation in general). Sometimes it happens with Asian guitars
though. What did the '80's Japanese Fender guitars cost new (anyone out
there know?) , they are doing pretty well on Ebay right now.
