Re: Recommendation: Gypsy (Rroma) Musicians

When I was a graduate student in anthropology I studied with Dr. Bertha
Quintana. She and a colleague, a psychologist, did live with the gypsies or
the Rom, in Spain. She has a good short book on them---"Que Gitano".
While the so called gypsies may have origins from India, they have populated
many areas of the world and have assumed different aspects that fit their
culture into the place where they live. Their language is called Romany.
In some countries the use of that language is all but lost. A "culture"
does not define a specific people because of ethnic origin but rather refers
to a collective set of learned behaviors that are institutionalized in
tradition and custom. If people are nomadic, and wander around the
world--but retain essential elements of their collective behavior they still
have a culture. Their is a vast amount of research regarding this topic and
specifically regarding the people you refer to.

To the original poster, I would suggest you go to a good library (a college
or university, especially if they have an anthropology department) and
research the topic but finding good information on gypsies, the Rom, and
Romany. You will be able to find links between regions in the kind of music
that is played. For example, the "gypsies" of Ireland have a specific music
also. There will be tons of information for you to gather. Papa
