How can I get these sounds, effect/pedal-wise? I'm playing a Squier Tele through a small Marshall amp with no bells and whistles...just noodling around.
Thanks.
Hi Rick
There wasn't much for effects around then but try lots of reverb for the surf, think wet. Many tunes use tremelo as well.
A palm mute near the bridge to dampen the sustain and add a little 'boink'. Lots of vibrato bends and shakes.
Here is a video and a Ventures link. Have a listen to their "Play guitar with the Ventures" albums for some hints.

A sound assocated with rockabilly is the slap echo created by the delay between the record and playback heads of a tape recorder. This is a very short slap but try a little longer as well. A little 'loose tube' edge or clipping is approriate.
Gordo .
