The human desire to play music crosses all socio-economic
boundaries. Look at the Jamaican percussionists using the
bottom half of a steel drum pounded and bent into certain
shapes. Did they do this because they liked the sound
or was it because used steel drums were cheaper than
a set of tamas?
As far as scratching (I am assuming sounds not technique)
listen to Latino, Asian, Hindu, African, and good old
American Blue Grass scratching on an old washboard.
Poverty takes an unconventional approach to musical
instrument design. When you want to play music and
have nothing anything that makes a sound is game. MJP.
