Chet Atkins was on the stereo a lot when I was young. Listening to him still sends chills op the back. My dad liked to say if you can play that well clean you wouldn't need a fuzz box.I know everyone looks at more modern guitar playing as "usually" the standard for excellence in guitar playing, rather than some of the older players. I am fully aware that the following list has players of verying styles but would still be interested in knowing everyones opinions on these older guitarists.
1. Bob Bogle (Lead), Don Wilson, Gerry McGee (Who also played with Kris Kristofferson, Linda ROnstadt, The Monkees, and others), Nokie Edwards, Bob Spalding. All one time or another members of "The Ventures" and all at one time or another lead guitarists for same as well as base and rythem.
2. Chet Atkins
3. Duane Eddy
4. Dick Dale
And others of the 40's-60's (I know some of those listed are still playing today, especially all of number 1and I think Dick Dale although I havent heard anything from him since Pipeline with SRV).

My dad still has his '33 Gibson arch top he used to play on the Louisiana Hay Ride. He could play like Chet without an amp. Awesome.
