A few of us in this group play lap steel, and I'm wondering why we bother.
If it is 6-string, what advantage is there over Spanish-position slide on
a
conventional guitar? Two things you can do more easily in the lap position
are hammers and pulls, and slants, but you can't fret behind the slide. I
have four lap steels, three of which were bought for their unusual pickups
and a great chunk of mojo, and an 8-string that was given me. I've also
made
and sold three others. I also play electric lap steel on a conventional
guitar, it hammers the frets a bit, but I have learned to minimise that,
and
in any event I only use the specific advantages to a small extent. Do any
of
you play lap steel because of their specific advantages or, like me,
because
it seemed like a good idea at the time?

OK for what its worth (it cost you nothin so....IMO). I tried lap on a
danelctro lap a friend had. It felt very strange to sit with it. I had
to relean how to look down at the thing. I had to change my
thinking... It sounded terrible cause I couldn't palm mute as well as
normal, and it had a wierd tuning I had to get use to. Then I grabbed
my Strat put the slide on my pinky, banged the frets a bit, found a
very light touch and BB King vibrato.. whalllaaaaaa got it. Never sat
down again. and it looks cooler : ' ) . Ed S meow

Palm muting is something I have neglected and should work on. It would be
difficult on lap steels such as mine that have string-through pickups. Do
you fingerpick or flatpick? Flatpicking works fine in Spanish position
because you can fret behind the slide, but would not take advantage of a lap
steel's potential.
Something else I find a lot easier on a lap steel but haven't tried to use
much is pinch harmonics.

I Flat pick and use std tuning.. I never fret behind the slide (that I
know of??). And I mostly do 1 string leads, maybe a double now and
then. of sometimes 3 at a time if the notes line up. lots of muting
and the guitar knows when to let em ring. I also use it on
LesPaul,Tele,and acoustic...ed
.
