They teach you to do that in music teacher school.

Perhaps a more proactive approach on your part
might be productive. Audition those teachers.
There's a thousand-billion kinds of learners
and teachers. What works for one may suck for
another.

Consider STOP taking lessons for a while. See what
you can figure out on your own. That forces you to
deal only with your own situation, nobody elses.
Then after a time, actively search for a teacher
that will help you to make sense of those things
that aren't clear for you.

Don't rely on the teacher to cause you to learn the thing.

The main reason I take guitar lessons is that I want to play guitar, but
lack motivation. When I was not taking lessons, it was easy for other
hobbies and stuff to take up my free time, and I hated myself for letting
that happen. With a decent teacher, I have an obligation to practice, and
get better.

I am not planning to be a rock star or anything like that, I just want to
be able to play songs with family and friends from time to time.

I think that Lumpy's comment is right, that the motivation has to come from within. Also, that it helps greatly to want to play a tune/song/lead solo, not the guitar.
