They'd surely put something like that in closer to the end.
Play the scratch for Duane, let him do his thing for
several takes. Then blend together bits and pieces
of takes for the desired outcome.
The scratch is typically light in terms of xtras.
ie, it's drums, bass, some chordal instrument. But
they hold out the oboes and bagpipes and pan flutes.
