I have a box of effect pedals that I use on rare occasions.
I recently bought a DI so I could electrify my banjo.
It works great through the PA using an XLR connection.
One pedal I had years ago I liked.
It was an auto wah by Boss.
Don't recall the model.
Some of the songs we are playing would sound good with a wah.
I have a Dunlop Cry Baby but it is too much of a pain to use while
standing.
So I took a chance and got (ebay) another Boss auto wah but this is a
newer model with human vowel sounds, tap tempo and several other
settings (AW 3).
It came yesterday and I played with it last night.
After trying different settings I found one that I like.
If I pick gently there is no or very little wah, has the out of phase
sound like a cry baby.
If I pick harder I get a more pronounced wah.
If I hold a note or chord it is a slow wah.
If I pick quickly it has a very funky sound much like in Papa was a
rolling stone.
I can get a huge variety of sounds from just one setting.
Finally found a pedal I like.

I have another pedal that I can't do without.
I always use it.
I got it because it has bass and treble cut an boost plus volume and
gain.
I have an old (1965) tube amp that has no tone controls.
Now I use it with my Marshall half stack (EL-34 tubes).
It makes Fender single coil pickups sound a lot hotter with more bass
and treble.
Digitech Bad Monkey.
Best investment I ever made in a pedal.

I'm an FX junkie - getting back to liking "sounds" over "music". For me the sound makes the music. I prefer to experiment, tweek, rearrange, play with FX like building blocks...pretty much where most of the fun is for me.
But the favs in my collection are still the basics - tape echo, flange, phase...my Moog pedals are the finest. I'm not much for compressors, distortions, or fuzz - though I do love my v.3 OCD, and not much of anything else. Big fan of the BBE processor too, when used properly - last in the chain in an FX loop, adjusted so it's transparent...but you can tell if it's on of off.
