Here's more "fun with guitar 'teachers'"
A guy came to me wanting lessons. He had taken lessons
from someone in the back room at the music store. He had
a sprial bound music staff notebook with hand written notes.

The teacher had added a line to the staff so that he had
six lines for tab. Somehow, on that tab, he had indicated
all the chromatic notes on each string. Difficult to duplicate
here in ascii, it was something like -

His hand written note was to "memorize the above". There
was no reference to "this is an E" or "This is an F#" or
similar. Just all the frets on all the strings.

Next page he had a crude drawing of the hand with the
finger abbreviations PIMA. Again, the note "Memorize this".

The guy was on his third lesson. He is an accomplished
piano and trumpet player, wanting to take up guitar.

I'm guessing he probably made a less than ideal choice
of teachers with that music store guy.

Lump

This is a whole different generation from the way we learned to read
music.
Guitar players today depend on tab.
Teachers even teach it.
I understand PIMA for finger picking though I don't use it.
I have had young guys in my band that learned the songs from tab.
For some reason they played every note as either a quarter note or an
eight note.
But there are some people who actually want to learn the right way to
read and play music.
Hopefully this group will help them along the narrow path to being
able to read and play music properly.
How many people here depend on tab?
