Can you tune your guitar and if so, how do you
do that?
Yes, with an electronic tuner, but starting to be able to do it by
hearing and comparing notes played for tuning on DVD/CD.
Can you tune the guitar by tuning one string (eg the low E) to a
reference
(either by en electronic tuner or a tone from a CD) then tune all the
others using that as the reference?
I know how to (or should I say, I've read how to in some of my books)
but I've never actually done it and couldn't say how to do it off the
top of my head, I seem to recall something about the fifth fret on one
of the strings and I think you have to use the fourth fret on one of the
strings.
yep...2nd string uses the 4th fret, but this only gets you very close,
(at least on my guitars). It'll sound a bit "out" when you play a g
chord for example, so you can fine tune it/tweak it that way...
I'm a noob though. :)
Speaking of tuners (and being a beginner), I saw a cool laser pick tuner
a guy demonstrated for me at the store the other day. The laser pulses
at the frequency of the each string, so when you pick it it flashes the
laser from the tip of the pick and you can see the string vibrations.
The more out of tune, the wider the range. You tune the guitar until
the bouncing strings get closer (frequency) until the string forms one
line under the laser light. He says he uses it during gigs because of
the background noise (people, bars, etc)....
I'm sure you all are familiar with it, but as a beginner I hadn't seen
one. I'm a brass player, so string tuning technology advances I had'nt
kept up on :)
One of these?

I use one all the time- the only weak spot is the note selector wheel-
it's hard to read in bad light.
