I've been thinking about doing a cover of this tune since a discussion of it was initiated by Tony D. here. The discussion revolved around re-creating the saxophone feel of the original (written and performed by Gerry Rafferty) using guitar. The Foo Fighters later covered it with guitar, and I think what I've done with it comes close to their feel:

The guitar part in question was done with my Les Paul Double Cutaway Plus, played through a Keeley Java treble boost pedal and a Marshall JCM 800 2204. I also chopped out the buzzy high frequencies (> 10 kHz) after the track was recorded, and added a single slapback delay with a delay time of about 40 ms. The solo toward the end of the song does the same thing but omits the delay.

The bass part used a Ric 4001 through Sonar's amp sim and EQ'd for a really punchy feel. Drums use Sonar 8.5's Session Drummer 3, which it seems to me has much more realistic drum sounds than its predecessor.

Comments welcome!

Listening now. You've certainly caught the FF intro, something I haven't attempted yet. As others have commented your vocals are getting better all the time, and the production is excellent. The only comments I have are that the vocals are too far back in the mix (more presence?), and it sounds a bit rushed to me, I was out of breath by the end of it.

I think I just need to bring up the vocal levels a bit. Thanks!

If I ever get round to doing it (when I get over the uke!), it will be a lot folksier and more introspective than that, but your version will be a good starting point, because of the cleanness of the leads.

Looking forward to it!
