This is a beginners group, so here's some technical stuff. Listen to
the few bars few bars of this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6VAbrnjdtYw

The first two chords are E7 and Edim7 - 0x6757 and 0x5656. How many of
can get Doc's timing on the little phase that follows that? It could
be tabbed as 7p0,3s4,0 (p = pull off, s=slide). Then some twiddly bits
based on an A7 chord, which are not too difficult for a fingerpicker.
I don't play it like that, but what ever I do I find the timing very
difficult to get in the smooth way that Doc does, especially the 3/4
slide. I first encountered it a few years ago when a student asked me
about it, and it came up again in a recent rmmga thread. I've lost
interest in Baker Street for the moment and got a bit fixated on this
again.

Wow. That dude is the real thing! Never heard of him before. Thanks for
the post.

As far as your challenge. I'm not sure I'd be able to match his left
hand technique.

Jim

<g> Actually, my right.

Jim

<g> Not heard of Doc Watson, go hang your head in shame!

The technique is the opposite for me, no big deal for the fingerpicking,
fretting agility bloody difficult. He is mainly a flatpicker, renowned
for the quality of his timing and good taste, the flatpicking equivalent
of Merle Travis.

Tony D

I probably heard him but didn't know who it was. His voice sounds
familier. Homespun has a couple of his instuctional books I might look
into later.

Damn good stuff

Jim

He runs Merlefest in honour of his son who died in a farm accident many
years ago. It attracts many big names in country music, I guess most
consider it an honour to play alongside him.
