That may be generally true, it doesn't apply to me. There are electric
players I admire, but I haven't tried to copy their gear or their exact
way
of playing things.

You can also get good sounds from cheap pickups, but you need to keep an
open mind about what actually does sound good for your purposes. EG, for
me
all hot humbuckers sound bad, regardless of price.

We don't have Corvettes or XKEs, but I get the allsuion. I don't see
anything wrong with that idea at all, provided the whole system is
mechanically sound and safe. - A consideration you don't have with guitars,
unless you rout (route?) the neck pickup cavity too wide/deep on a set
neck.
