I think that is the best approach for attacking attack. That's
what they do, in the job of compressing. Now to get it the way
you want may take a lot of experimentation and possibly the
right compressor (they're not all equal). It should be possible
to make it subtle enough with the right pedal.

Yep, when you start messing with pickups you soon realise that the
differences we are looking for are pretty subtle. So many little
things can have a small effect on the tone. Mr Kinman told me, he
sometimes mounted strat pickups with heavier screws because the extra
iron warmed up the tone a bit, it's possible.

I trouble with this one. Though it probably has better chance
than Eric Johnson's preferred brand of batteries for his pedals.

But whether you can hear it in a blind taste test? I doubt it.

Snark.

I think the screw thing is going to be very very subtle ;-) The
different battery theory actually makes sense with a few pedals. Eric
Johnson uses a Fuzz Face which is a very basic transistor clipper.
Fuzz Faces do sound noticably different with small changes in battery
voltage. It's something to do with how the clipping is shared between
the two transistor and can be clearly explained by a proper
electronics bod.

Have a look at this link and the bit titled Sun Dial
http://www.analogman.com/fuzzface.htm

PS. IMHO with most other distortion pedals a slight voltage difference
make no real difference.

I think your explanation is pretty good:

The Voodoo Lab Power Pedal 2 has 2 outputs with "Adjustable "Sag" that a
emulates dying battery. ... emulate dying carbon batteries for nailing that
vintage sound in your wah, overdrive or fuzz."

Great....even power supplies come with knobs. <g>
