This piece of silliness came up in alt.guitar recently. The headstock looks exactly like that on a neck seen here in Oz as both a cheap part and on inexpensive importer brand guitars.

In terms of Gibson's product and marketing policies, I don't know what to make of it.

Old news really...I wouldn't say they were coping Fenders...more like squiers or Cheap SX guitar packs.
BTW: They already make Tele & Strat clones (see Valley Arts guitars)
