OK, that link took me to "Chaucer's Description of a Helicopter", but I

Whoops. See what a computer whiz I am?

That's probably the issue. The bass is mainly high up on the neck and I
took an EQ curve from a previous tune I had done. But where the bass is
playing now, it's competing with a lot of other stuff, and that mid peak
probably needs to be fiddled with, and EQ curves for the guitars fiddled
with, as you say, to create separate space for each instrument.

How much did you tweak the panning? Panning instruments to their own part of the "stage" can help. Lead vox, bass and kick are, I think, usually panned dead center, and then the various guitars and other voices etc can be panned here and there to help keep them out of each other's way.

..

I don't use the headphones very much while mixing, mainly the monitors
(Yamaha HS50M). They're good monitors but I gather a lot of folks use a
subwoofer with them, which I don't have. The 'phones are mainly for a
sanity check at various stages.

I googled those monitors and got a review at Mix online.
http://mixonline.com/mag/audio_yamaha_hsm_monitor/

From the conclusion of that review: "The HS50M would be my first choice (among current production models) for a band-limited mix reference mounted atop a console. Similar to the NS-10M, the HS50M makes it easy to balance levels for a mix's midrange elements. Unlike the NS-10M, the HS50M readily reveals vocal sibilance and cymbals that are EQ'd too crisply. The HS50M provides a nearly perfect reference for how a mix will sound on small consumer-playback systems and is a veritable bargain at $249.95 MSRP (sold singly). Add the perfectly matched HS10W ($599 MSRP) to the setup, and you have an excellent full-bandwidth system."

The reviewer seemed to love the HS50Ms, but there are also hints in there that they have definite limitations in the lower ranges. A glance at prices online shows the HS10W subwoofer can be had for $350, but that's still a chunk of change.
There are cheaper ones that would probably really help even if they aren't the optimal match up of Yamaha to Yamaha.

Thanks for causing me to gawk at gear. If I end up buying a subwoofer studio monitor I'll have you to blame!

My home stereo is shot to hell, one of these days I'll replace it. As I
said, the main issue is that there's a huge disparity on the various
systems I have as to how loud that low end is.
