Think of it like this.
Standard tuning, put a full capo on the 2nd fret.
No suprises there. Normal chords, everything just
up 2 half steps.
But that pesky D shape open chord doesn't have a very
low root. The 4th string open (capo'd in this case)
is as low as it can go.
So now change that full capo to covering only 1 through 5
and leave the 6th string open. Now you have that D shape
chord with a low root note (the open 6th string). All the
normal chord shapes finger regularly except for open E and Em
and their variants. If you want that ii chord Em(7) you can
reach down with your index finger and fret the 6th string
at the appropriate spot. But normal F#m and G and anything
else frets normally. Big, spread out D shape chord with three
D's spread over 2 octaves.
Move the whole affair anywhere you like by putting a
full capo on X fret, partial capo on X +2 fret.
