Seesaw

I just had a little mental picture while reading a thread about an odd guitar in alt.guitar.

Imagine the (electric) guitar sitting on one end of a seesaw and the amplification gear sitting on the other. When the amp gear is set clean, the seesaw is balanced. As you turn up the gain knob the guitar gets lighter and the amp heavier, until the amp end is sitting on the ground and the guitar contributes almost nothing to the balance except its volume knob.

When I turn the gain knob on my H&K amp to 3 o'clock, all the guitars I plug in sound pretty much the same, and their tone controls have almost no effect. OTOH, I spend a long time looking for the right *combinations* of pickups, guitars and amp gear to get a good clean sound.
