I wonder who said that? An electric played at high gain does not forgive
mistakes, random string rubbing or any of that. You have to play like a dainty little flower when you're playing that full on screaming electric stuff.

And Rich. Well, I just made significant progress by using a thumbpick instead of my nail, it meant I could get the pinky edge of my hand low enough to damp the bass strings. It puts the other picking fingers into an awkward looking position though.

So, finger picking a high gain, highly compressed electric. Forgive my nosiness, but why? I mean, why is the amp set like that? What sort of music are you essaying with this finger style?

I'm not prejudiced against nosiness, but you won't always get an answer, unlike this time. The answer is on a few different levels:

I can't flatpick and don't have a great ambition to learn.

I discovered that my amp has a nice-sounding gain channel, similar to a JCM800 if you are to believe the blurb.

Curiosity

Challenge

Desire to try something different. I only play slide on electrics, and given my inabilities that is unlikely to change. This is the kind of thing that got me interested:

If you want a view of my history, have a listen to "Trouble in mind", "John Henry" and "Hard time playing this". The direction I'm trying to go is in "Deathly", second half:

That is played on a 30" bari tuned to open D and capoed (to G?), lap style. I think it is a "double OD", two TS808 style boxes set moderately. The string damping is much easier lap style than in Spanish position, but Spanish position offer a different range of playing options - and is potentially easier for me if/when I get the hang of it.
