Newb device from a guitar newb(35 yrs old).Things I've learned since I got my first guitar 4 days ago.
I just bought a reasonably priced newb guitar after the salesman tried to sell me a $350 guitar to start out on(bought a $150 laminate top acoustic).I told him that this was my first time picking up a guitar so did he have a learning book?Gave me some piece of sh** with power chords and some inverted something or others that I might be able to use in a couple of years.
My advice....
Buy a reasonably priced guitar to start, to see if you're going to stick with it.
Go to the library and go to the children's section and pick up the Mel Bay primer for kids and check the other kids books for music theory you can actually learn and understand.
Practice scales and alternate picking every day.
Practice some chords every day.
Find a cool song you can try and do the chords or TAB to to keep you motivated in a modern-rock direction.
There's a Easy Guitar publisher who lumps a fair number of good songs into each book for a good price.
Download a free metronome and use it during practice.
Download or visit a free tuning page to stay in tune.
Visit loads of websites and research as much as you can on mistakes or regrets other people have made or have.
