Well my 0.063mm (42 awg) wire has arrived. I've modded my manually
driven winder so I can put the wire spool on the floor with the wire
feeding off the top of the spool. Also set up a bar with a couple of
width stops, more plastic clothes pegs with a bit of masking tape to
stop them moving. In two half hour sessions I've wound about 5000
turns.
I'm winding onto a strat sized bobbin I made from 2mm tufnol and 4.5
mm dia x 19 mm long alnico V magnets. The bobbin's a bit deeper than a
standard vintage strat pickup. Going for 7K to 8K. Planning to add a
steel base plate then wax pot it. Bit like a Stelly pickup but not
quite as hot.
May take me a couple of weeks but I'll be back.

Have you had any further trouble with wire breaks? At that gauge,
it wouldn't be hard to snap it. Does it wind fairly flat easily?
I guess that would be one advantage of machine winding (where the
wire is guided onto the spool).
