Taylors are well made guitars, and as you point out, very easy to
play.
However, they are as a whole, a bit too bright for me. I think this
is due to the use of thinner woods.
I have to play one with a cedar top and rosewood back/sides to get a
warmer sound.
I tend to gravitate toward them because of what you point out, but
have never bought one due to the tone.
I feel much the same way about them, generally good design, but the tone doesn't do it for me. The instantly resettable neck joint is a big plus for me in their design. The only two I have really liked have been in the 400 series, an old version in cedar/mahogany, and a modern one in Sitka/ovangkol.
I nearly bought the old 412, but the poly finish was bubbling a bit over the binding, and that turned me off more than all its dings, scratches and buckle rash. - Because I saw it as either bad design or careless finishing.
