Real property certainly isn't "protected forever" - it changes hands to the highest bidder or strongest force just like anything else...just ask anyone whom lost their property and/or family heirlooms during WWII (or their family, for that matter...), or in the middle east...

....or try telling the people that built a shopping mall over my family's historical 1/8 acre graveyard in Tennessee to tear down that mall give it back - or even pay us for it...I don't even know what they did with the bodies..."protected".

Nothing is "protected".
