Not exactly a tax, it's a licence to operate broadcast receiving
equipment but you could see it as a kind of taxation. The money goes
to fund the BBC operations.
....yeah...that's sort of a "tax"...a "use fee", whatever. They still take your money...
I prefer to see it this way: it is a fee to allow me to watch four
damn good TV channels and listen to over half a dozen radio channels
completely free of advertising (other than the occasssional self-
promotion).
And having suffered US TV broadcasts, believe me it is worth every
penny.
....I'll take your point there - American TV is CRAP and I don't watch much of it other than the news...I do watch a good bit of Brit TV on PBS, but I don't get "taxed" for it...other than the cable fee...which is a sore point...
Underthat sort of system I couldn't see them doing anything else - because in
essence you're "pirating" from the government re: taxes.

I'll stand by the above, as it still makes sense to me within the context of you having to pay your gov a "use fee".
