Are some people born with talent, or can anyone learn to play like Jimi Hendrix?

And I'd rather play like ME than Hendrix any day...

This is exactly where I am coming from. Even though I will learn to cop other cover tunes regularly, my interest is not in doing that. What I want to learn is what I need to know to do ME.

not having to "perform" insures I can do that.

This surprises me some. Based upon what I read here, I would have thought that you'd be out there "lovin' it", performing.

Snark.

No...I get asked to a lot (more so lately, it seems...), and I like crewing for other folks, but I seriously hate and can't stand the thought of "performing" myself. Generally when I'm in front of a group I zone out and don't even know they're out there - I'll play to the other musicians, but I don't really get any charge or click out of a crowd. It just feels like "work" to me...maybe because I wasn't in the right band, or because of not just being allowed to "be myself".

I have gotten up on stage for guest spots in the past couple years, so the locals in this small town know I can do something...and then there was quite a buzz going about the band forming that I ended up walking away from over the "just be yourself" issue...nobody was allowing me to be myself. I just turned down that gig I was asked for in April, and people are still walking up and asking about when I'm going to "get something going", or at least do the Sunday jams down at the bar...I may work my way up to that one day, but I'm in no hurry. I really prefer the tech side of showbiz, I think...

....I've done some movie extra work and that was kinda fun, though. But I was still mostly looking over the gear during the breaks...
