Re: Why originals?

Through the years I have auditioned many guitar players.
Most of the older guys seem to have everything together and are good
players and an asset to the band.
Some of the younger guys are fantastic players but the majority are
not.
They don't know basic chords or progressions nor do they know what
chords are in a key.
That's OK.
If they are willing to learn I will help them out.
Lately I have seen several ads on Craigslist from original bands
looking for players.
In this area original bands don't go very far.
Most are just loud and screaming.
I asked one guy why he does originals rather than covers and he said
because he doesn't know enough about theory to play covers and that he
can't learn from recordings or sheet music.
If you put it all in tab he can play it.
4 out 5 of the last CL ads were from original bands looking for
players.
It makes me wonder why these guys are trying to form an originals
band.
Is it because they can't play covers?
Do they actually think they are good song writers?
I live in a rural area where audiences want classic rock and country.
There is an area on the north side of Chicago that caters to original
bands.
But out here they just don't make it.
I hate to see these guys go through months of writing, arranging and
rehearsing music that nobody wants to hear.

Pt

As long as the music is good it doesn't matter but people like to hear what they are familiar with which is why cover bands are more commercially viable. Not many people can write music that the majority of people are going to appreciate.

I never thought that people should get into music for money anyway. If it turns out you're talented enough to *make a living* at music, you're one of the fortunate few, IMHO. So do whatever makes you happy. If it's only originals, get a real job and pursue your dreams. Otherwise, learn some covers and be like everyone else trying to earn a living doing other peoples stuff. For most, the path to happiness lies somewhere in-between.
