I guess my question is, do I move my 2nd finger when changing
backwards and forwards between Am and C - or do I not put my finger
close to the fret?
No, your first and second fingers are pivot fingers and should remain
static.
From C major to A minor you are going from a longitudinal left handpresentation to a transversal one. Sorry for the technical terms, but
you'll understand this: Your hand is connected to your arm. Your arm
(elbow) should be in toward your body for C major, lift your third
finger, then kick your elbow out away from your body, where is your
third finger now? Pretty cool huh? Do the reverse for the opposite
progression.
Make sure to seperate the movements at first
1) lift the finger
2) move the arm
3) drop the finger
And, of course, learn all of this outside of any rhythm. You can
employ that after you create the synapse in your brain that will guide
your fingers.
All the best.
