Problem is the wound strings sound terrible (Elixir Electric 10's).
I never played bottleneck before so is it worth sticking with this and
practicing more or is it a waste of time and always going to sound bad on
wound strings?
Keep at it you will get it.. I play slide on all strings on my Strat.

Ok, many thanks as long as it is achievable I will go for it.
Im no expert as I've been playing guitar about 31/2 years (previously
a bassist) ,but try some reverb and distortion with your slide
playing - gives more sustain . I use a thick glass slide on my pinky
so I can still play cords ( I hated the metal ones and bottles) . I
did this one about 2 years ago in my basement - I play all wife sings.
I was trying slide for about a month at this recording ( the trick was
a light touch so you don't hit the frets). I use my std Strat medium
action std tuning.
