they are critiqued by their fellow students. Everyone plays,
everyone (ideally) critiques.

If the majority of the class is "C" or below, ie Bell Curve rated,
what good is the critique to me?
I guess it would help me accept criticism from those who know as
little or less about the subject than me?

You accept feedback from the people walking in off the street during
your open mic performance, right?

This is no different... Just more feedback on your performance.

The worst kind of feedback is NO feedback. You can't
make course corrections with no information.

The 2nd worse kind (IMO) is where your friends say
"it was excellent/good/ok" because they don't want
to hurt your feelings. You can't make good course
corrections with invalid information (how many
American Idol candidates say that their co-workers
encouraged them, but they _really_ should
have stayed at home). Honest Lumpy-like feedback
is the kind of feedback you really want. :)

Feedback doesn't matter who it comes from. They don't
have to be musicians to tell you what they liked about
a performance or not. Even a yawn or some foot tapping
are hints at how well you did.

If you are looking for technique critique/suggestions,
then this is different. This is what you look to
your teacher for.

Snark.
