I tend towards classical technique. I use the thumb a lot on the 3
bottom
strings and my index, middle, and ring fingers on the top 3. Of course
sometimes I don't obey this rule. Assuming your melody on the higher
strings I'd alternate index and middle.

I study classical as well and that is what the
Royal Conservatory suggests as a "general rule".
But since you have 5 fingers, and usually avoid
the pinky, reducing that to 4, and 6-strings
to play, you know that there are going to be
exceptions! Some exceptions are just for
playing comfort, speed, emphasis or control.
So the 'general rule' is often broken.
