I think many newsgroups are little communities and thus do bring about an
amount of off-topicness that that is brought about by familiarity and
relationship. Regulars on AGB know the general nature of most people here
and tolerate the vagueries and shortcomings of those who commit to the
newsgroup.
I do like to hear about the lives of some people in the group as it makes
them real people rather than just faceless names on a screen. In my opinion
a bit of off-topic isn't a problem because sometimes I need help from this
group of people who I trust more than some random forum. further to that,
these people who I hope respect me will deal with any music I share on the
group sensitively and constructively, in this way I learn about bettering
myself and they are more willing to give their time to listen to my music
because i gave time talking about their horse or dog or experience down the
shopping centre.
It depends what you want, do you want to leech information and knowledge
from the people on the group or exchange knowledge ideas and opinions
building up a rapport and relationship with those people.
In my understanding leeches dont last long here, but people who want to be a
part of the community stick around and put up with the vagueries and
oddities that exist and get a lot out of it.
