I'm a very DIY kind of guy and I remember back in the good old days
when Radio Shack held sway and Heathkits were something to covet.

These days I see a bit of a grassroots reinvigoration with places like
Make magazine;http://www.makezine.com/.

I've been wanting to add a tuner to my accessories (I used to use a
Mac w/ a tutorial program and microphone to tune a while back.)

So, I wonder if there are any out there to be made- perhaps not a
whole feedback driven, variable note type (the kind that says "up" or
"down") but rather perhaps just a simple tone generator that you can
tune the guitar to by ear.

Since a korg GA-30 cost only $15 why would anyone think of
building their own tuner???

OK, I thought my intro would allude to the 'why' part, but since you
and the other guy asked 'Y', I'll try and speak on it.

I am tech orientated, I come by it honest. I had a grandfather who
worked with Edison and my own father helped create timing gears for a
radio telescope and the trigger at SLAC. (Google is your friend.)

At the same time I also have the Muse pestering me to play, sing, hum,
draw, etc, etc any kind of artistic/creative expression will do.

I've been combining the two since I was a kid and I'd like to add it
to the gadgets I have around the place.

So, the double sided answer in the nutshell is 'for fun' & 'why not?',
and here is a bonus answer to boot:

- Who knows what may come from it?
