Re: My nut came off

DO NOT FOLLOW THE ADVICE IN THAT ARTICLE UNLESS YOU PLAN ON BREAKING PINS

It will often take a tool such as shown --BUT DO NOT PULL OR PRY AS SHOWN AND DIRECTED-- as the idiot in that article is doing and advocating as doing so will cause the pin to bend and break as force is applied to the length of the pin. All you need to do is use the tool to --GENTLY TWIST BACK AND FORTH A BIT-- which will release the friction on the pin which in most cases can then be pulled out by hand.

As for "gluing" the nut do not use anything other than some rubber cement. All you need to be concerned with is holding the nut in place as the tension from the strings will do the rest of the work. Do not use any other type of glue no matter what you are told by idiots who think they know what they are doing.

If you ever for whatever reason need to replace the nut the strong glues being engineered these days will bond to the fibers of the wood the neck is made of and will rip some of those fibers out with the glue as the nut is cut and has to be forcibly extracted.

This is common sense to persons who have crafting skills.

As for number of winds? The more winds the more friction is applied to the string once wound and tuned and given a quality tuner assembly will help keep the string "in tune." Personally, I ALWAYS wind 3 winds and put the loose end up through the 4th wind.

Get into the habit of ALWAYS putting or replacing one string at a time to keep constant tension on the neck as evenly distributed as the remaining tightened and presumably tuned strings impose on the neck. Its more work but its the little things that matter in the long run.

A drop or two of white glue will be fine. Rather than just let the
nut go where it wants (which should be close to the right place) look
at the strings and make sure that they are centered on the fretboard
so the strings are parallel to the fretboard edges, with an equal
amount of free space on either side. Hopefully the nut will also be
flush with the edges of the fretboard, if not file down any protruding
end so it doesn't stick out.

See the rest of frets.com for as much info as you can stand on guitar
maintenance.

Thanks for the info. Also thanks for the link. That's an outstanding
