Re: Full Song vs Riff Nibbling

I seem to be floating between many different song riffs, playing only
the main riff, or solo, or chorus of a song, rather than practising a
full song. I really would like to be able to play a full song all the
way through, but I can't find any decent songs with decent tabs out
there.

I realise there are (approx) 80 billion tabs on the net but they all
seem to be either i) Incorrect (missing notes, capo when the artist
doesnt use one/vice versa) or ii) Incomplete.

As an example, I was looking for a tab for Waterfall by the Stone
Roses the other day, and found only;
i) With a non-capo version (actual song was played with a capo)
ii) A capo version that showed only 6 notes (the main riff).

A lot of tabs on the net seem to also be the posters interpretation of
the song 'I like to play it this way' whereas I'd like to play it the
way the artist intended.

Does anyone else have this problem too? Am I missing something here?
Where do you get Full Song tabs from? Do I need to actually go buy a
book with them in? In this day and age???!???!!!!

If you're still building skills, this is pretty much what you are going to do unless you start playing with other people.

In the meantime, if you want to play through whole songs and work on skills, what I find is very instructive (and have started doing again, lately...) is to play along with the radio, and use your ears, and not tabs...I never try and "learn" much from a tab. It gets me started, then I go listen to the record.

When you play along with the radio, you get one shot at the whole song for the length of the song, and then you have to move on to another song at random - that builds both your ear, and your ability to react.

Improvise along with the song if you can't nail it, and don't worry about "nailing it", IMO - the "way the artist intended" is the artist's way; learn to do it your way from the beginning, and one day I'll likely be listening to you on the radio.

Start by identifying the key, then the chords, then improv along with the solo. The more you do this the faster you'll get at being able to do it...all by ear and feel.

And make sure you never change your strings for 30 years.
