I must admit that I'm a bit taken aback (not to say
flabbergasted) by some of the reactions to my use of
words like "soul" and "landscape" when talking about
playing music. Or when I talk about listening to how
a note sounds I get "who cares what it sounds like !"
(to paraphrase :-).
I've spent most of my life living in a super-rational
fashion and it's only very recently that I've come to
believe that things like soul and feeling are much
more important and meaningful. I believe that music,
and most other arts, are all about feeling, what the
artist was feeling at the time of creation and what
onlookers feel when experiencing the artist's creation.
It seems that learning to play guitar has been reduced
in some people's minds to learning to play by numbers.
Follow the dots and become a musician. This isn't a
science class ! I argue that most musicians that are
interesting to listen to do not go about their trade
in such a rational fashion.
