EVH is playing his solo thinking "Ok, C# now F#
now really fast G# A G# A G#"?

Find the "neighborhood" you want to work in
(the chord shape, box, CAGED position, whatever
your personal interp is) then play the notes of
that neighborhood. Know where the root is so
you know where to anchor the box.

Adding the additional step of applying an English
language name for the notes is a wasted step.
Classical musicians don't name notes while they play.
They just know that "the dot on the 2nd line is
this valve on my French Horn".
