I too have just recently acquired an electric gruitar after
having played acoustic for three years or so. I haven't
really started playing the electric yet but the little I have
played has made the differences between electric and acoustic
very apparent.

On the one hand it's really neat to be able to play rock and
blues and have it sound like real rock and blues, instead of
just some weak approximation. On the other hand, I find that
you can't beat the acoustic for clarity of tone. Just strumming
a chord on my acoustic is so rich in individual fine bits of
tone whereas the electric is much more coarse and mixed up.

I thought that once I got an electric I'd never look back to
the acoustic but now I don't think that's going to happen.

Yup, the acoustic is therapeutic. Been around a lot longer than the
electric. It's definitely more individual, IMO.

They're really two different worlds in a way. There is enough to explore
on acoustics to occupy a lifetime, and many people do. Yet OTOH, there's
another whole world with electrics.

With electrics, I think tone becomes a larger variable than on acoustics,
because you are always trying different EQ, effects, pedals, distortions,
amp, and settings on all of the above. Not to mention that strings and
pickups and other such hardware changes factor in.

On top of that, electric technique is important: if you play high gain
for example (distorted), then string muting becomes even more critical.

Sometimes I think there is more to distortion playing in the sense of
eliminating all those unwanted sounds (to get "clean distortion" if there
is such a thing), than the notes & power chords themselves. Its what you
"don't hear" that sometimes counts in technique.

But at the end of the day, it all really boils down to what you like. I
like steel string acoustic, classical and loud power-chord rock. Someday
I hope to also play nice Kopflerish electric finger style as well. Then
there's keyboards... if only I could quit my day job!

Snark.
