Ask a newbie to express his inner feelings using the guitar at his first
lesson.
Why not ? Isn't that what the student is there for ?
Why would knowing a bunch of chords and riffs (or, heaven
forbid, scales) bring a student any closer to knowing how
to express their feelings ? It seems to me that it would
be better to start with a very simple exercise, like
repeatedly playing a single note, and have the student
pour everything they've got into it. Once they start to
see what that feels like they could try it with maybe two
notes.
I bet that after a short while the student couldn't care
less about other people's music. They'd be too into making
their own.
