Thanks to CS for a very informative description of midi files and
sequences.
Thanks Cap'n Ron for the information and link to the newsgroup
alt.binaries.karaoke that I was not aware of. It seems that Karawin will
do what I want. It is a very involved program that will do far more than
I want but I will give it a go.
