Yes, FirstAlternate is right according to what I have read also.

The rationale for Martin to build dreds in the first place was for
bluegrass guys being able to be heard along with the fiddle and banjo.

The boominess of the dred allowed them to cut thru, otherwise, the 000/
OM type guitars would get a bit lost soundwise.
