You can always call for a retard on the ending (no I am not poking fun
at Lumpy), but everyone has to be on the same page or it sounds awful.
Retard, Rubato, Cadenza, Fermata. All of them
alter the rhythm. If the player can convince me
he's retarding or rubato-ing, it's fine. But if
he sounds like he's not doing it on purpose,
it sounds like his rhythm is suffering.
Same with melody or harmony. Convince me that the
iim7b5 chord in the 9th measure of the Sesame Street
theme is intentional, and I'll buy it. But if I don't
perceive that you're doing it on purpose, it will appear
to me as a "wrong" chord.
You can't deliberately alter time (or any aspect
of music) until you can
deliberately lock in the time (or whatever aspect).
