There's clearly a difference between rhythmic variations that are
intended and controlled and those that aren't. The same goes for
playing precisely on the beat: playing ahead of or behind the beat can
be very effective when done in the right context, but being off the
beat can ruin the groove of a song if it's just due to sloppy play.
It's interesting that this thread has been all about speeding up or
slowing down the beat, and no one has mentioned being on the beat.
