This is totally a matter of opinion. The guys I play with want to
copy the songs exactly the way they were recorded & I can't imagine
having more fun or being more satisfied when we get it right. For
example, Collective Soul's "The World I know" generally sounds like
*** if not played correctly, especially when you have keyboard
(strings). We do jam on a few songs & hope to eventually play some
original stuff, but in the meantime, playing it right is a tool or
gauge for how well we are progressing. Chilliwack's "Fly At Night" is
another good example where if you don't get the acoustic intro,
vocals, solos and acoustic outro right, it just doen't work, IMO, & we
know who is on & who is off because we know how it's SUPPOSED to
sound.
While I understand this, and do it too to a degree in certain
settings, I belive on most tunes it is IMPOSSIBLE to accomplish.
Very few recorded tunes today have fewer than 3 guitar tracks on
them. So unless you want to look like the final scene from "A Mighty
Wind" (what 8 or more guitars on stage), you have to compromise.
Also, very few acts play tunes live exactly like they do on the
record, which would probably be boring for them to do night in and
nigh out on a tour, plus see the above.
So, the question is (each time this topic comes up), not being able to
do it perfectly as recorded, but how close?
It is a whole lot less black and white than brother Pt suggests, imo.
