Of course there are exceptions where people will rewrite a song but
usually they learn to 'play it right' first.
I know that there are people who will disagree with this but can they
play it as written or as recorded?
Yeah, that would be me, and we've discussed this before, but why not again for the newer folks?
To me, "playing it right" means playing it well. Let's take Billy Joel's "Just The Way You Are". I don't play piano or have a band with a sax behind me. It's just me and the guitar. Does that mean I don't do the tune? No, it means I deconstruct the tune and understand it as a musical piece. I then reconstruct it maintaining the elements and discarding the foo-foo (I decide which is which) Of course, I include the signature riff. Sounds simple and sometines it is. It usually requires a lot of thought and experimentation. When it's done, it involves a lot of satisfaction.
Do I pay it note for note before I do all this? I can't think of any time when that's been necessary. I derive no pleasure from doing a song note for note. If that's what I want to hear I'll put on the CD and have a beer.
BTW, pt, I picked up a vocal harmonizer, partly because of your post on the subject, and it's great. I got the Vocalist 2 because I never plan to use more than two extra voices, if that. I had avoided these things because I thought you had to set the key and you might fool it if you went to a bridge in another key, but this thing stays right with you and will even move the generated voices if you chang chords while holding a note. As with any new toy, the trick is to not overuse it. Good recommendation.
