Back in my beginner days I would buy a book of songs I wanted to play.
Even though I could read notation I took the easy way out and payed
the chords that were above the lyrics.
It never sounded right but it worked good enough...Till I decided that
it was not good enough.
As I have mentioned many times one of the most important things is ear
training.
Sit down and listen to a song, play along with it over and over.
Each time you hear it you will hear something different.
You will also find that there are usually more than one guitar
playing.
Often 3 or 4 guitars.
Keep listening and playing along.
Try to separate the guitars.
In time you will be able to hear each instrument separately and how it
interacts with the other instruments.
This won't happen overnight.
The more you put in to it the more you get out of it.
And Always TAP YOUR FOOT!

I recently got a mac computer with digital audio.
What a difference!
I can hear all the parts clearly.
If you are able to use digital audio it will help considerable with
your ear training.

Damn -- oops I mean Darn - here all the time I was actually listening
to my band mates live drums and Tube amps - with narry any digital in
sight.( just a reverb unit that need to go out the door, ).... better
get a digital converter and earbuds so I can hear it more clearly...
but yes I think Headphones on a computer ( or Guitar trainer or
whatever) is a great way to learn songs .. ps --- CDs are all digital

Good ear monitors are great on stage.
They keep guitar players from playing too loud.
